Inn Signs - Roscoe Arms

One might think that a pub named the Roscoe Arms in Liverpool was named fairly straightforwardly after a particular member of the Roscoe family - but it is not as easy as that.  There is also a pub called the Sir Henry Roscoe in Liverpool and yet Sir Henry (1833-1915) was a Manchester man - a professor of chemistry at Manchester university and MP for South Manchester.

The Liverpool Roscoes included Thomas (1791-1871) an eminent translator and scholar and his father, William (1753-1831) a poet, historian and author who was also born in Liverpool.  Judging by the sign I think this pub is named for the latter.

  1. It's interesting to think of the history of a town as being preserved by the names of its inns and pubs.
