Inn Signs - Bishop Blaize

Bishop Blaise is said to have been flayed alive with iron combs as a result of which he is the patron of woolcombers.  His symbols are  a woolcomb and two crossed candles.  This inn in Exeter is next to Cricklepit Mill and its fulling barn.

  1. And that is something one wants to be reminded of while having a drink or a meal, because...? (Not that I'm sure it's any stranger than lots of other names of British pubs and inns...)

  2. Yikes - what a horrible way to go! I have a cousin named Blaise - I wonder if he knows the background to his name?

  3. Religion always seems to be involved with tragedy or causing tragedy.

  4. Ugh... how creative people are when it comes to devising methods for torturing and killing others.

  5. The stories of martyrs often make me feel so puny in my faith. Could i go through what they did? Interesting sign.

  6. "Why" I thought to myself "do I know nothing whatsoever about this chap?" So I invoked the help of a search engine (DuckDuckGo which, with a recent update was set as default on Firefox - again). It came up with a huge list of pubs bearing the name. What it didn't come up with was who he was. So I Googled it and got all the information. For someone who lived in Armenia nearly as long ago as the start of Christianity he's certainly made his mark on the English pub scene. I haven't managed to work out why.

  8. Hi John! I was going through my comments and realized that your blog had disappeared from my blog list. I don't know how that happened but I found you again and put it back on and I have been going through posts I've missed. I love all your sketches! You are very talented! Having a few artists in my family, I love to see other's work. Your kitties have grown up and are so beautiful! I hope your Summer is going good and your health doing good too. Glad to have you back! Take care!
