This is a George VI letterbox in Scotland. It is of a similar style to wall letterboxes to be found from Land’s End to John O’Groats. It has a crown and the king’s cipher. But when Queen Elizabeth came to the throne the English and Scottish letterboxes diverged.
The first joint monarch of Scotland and England was James I (James VI of Scotland) who was Elizabeth I’s heir. As a result, when Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952 she was the first Elizabeth, queen of Scotland but Elizabeth II of England. The letterboxes in England and Wales have a cipher with E II but that would not be appropriate for Scotland so modern Scottish boxes have no cipher, only the crown.
